Activation Rate

Activation rate is the percentage of signups who complete a key action that signals they got value. High activation predicts retention.

What Is Activation Rate? How to Calculate and Improve It

Formula: Activation Rate = (Users Who Completed Key Action / Total Signups) x 100. Example: 1000 signups, 400 completed core workflow = 40% activation. Define activation milestone carefully: must correlate with long-term retention. Slack activation = sending 2000 team messages. Improve activation by: reducing friction, better onboarding, showing value faster.

Examples

A product gets 1,000 signups in a month, and 350 of them complete the core workflow that defines activation. Activation rate is 350 divided by 1,000, times 100, which is 35 percent. Raising that number through better onboarding is usually the fastest lever for improving downstream retention.
